Penesetum Fireworks - are they dead?

I bought a few plug plants last spring that grew into small plants and were in the border ok by the time winter came. I also bought a large established one by mistake on a trip to the garden centre thinking it was different! All of them died back in winter as expected, now I'm wondering if they're dead or if they're just slower than other grasses to resurface come spring? The larger plant is showing no signs of new growth and if any of them survived I would hope that one would.

We only had a handful of frosts down to about -2 so nothing too harsh, and my Japanese Blood Grass has come back after winter and has shoots about 2" high so far so I'm hoping the penesetum have survived too. Can anyone tell me if they're usually a bit behind other plants in spring or should I give up hope of seeing them again?

Some wait until the ground is warm before waking up.

I don't think those are very hardy.

Pennisetum Fireworks, is only regarded as being half hardy, and would need protecting over winter.

How can you lie there and think of England

I did mulch over them and a few other delicate things and all the rest survived, maybe they aren't as delicate as the penesetum though, oops. Oh well, lesson learnt.

I bought two fireworks end of last summer and all it said about them was it died back over winter. So I left them where they were, and it looks like I have lost mine too. Lesson learned. Expensive lesson learned !! image

Thanks Verdun, I cant tell you how disappointed I am at losing them. I am pretty new to the GW forum, but now I know where I can ask for advice if I  have a problem with my garden. I am just learning how to use this laptop too and should maybe have looked up some advice  about the Fireworks on the net. They looked  so beautiful too. I am quite sad, but you learn something new every day.

Like you Linda I'm really miffed as they weren't cheap. No-one in their right mind would pay that much for an annual no matter how nice they were! None of the plant labels said they wouldn't survive the winter. Expensive lesson indeed.

Emma I am going to be very careful when buying any plant I am not sure about. the plant labels were very misleading. There was nothing at all saying that they would die if left outside. Wont ever buy them again. image
