Last years compost purchase was a disaster.

A local garden centre own brand. Almost zero seed germination, veg did poorly.

But that was a year ago,

Got some new big brand stuff and it just feels and smells right this time. Annual climbers up in a few days , strawbs seem to like it .

I got some Mother Earth compost from my local GC, 4 x 70L for 12 quid, used 5 bags so far and am impressed. Had B&Q last year and won't rush back.

I buy Wickes compost  which has no green waste in; fabulous stuff. I also buy their topsoil and manure. Great prices and all lovely stuff. Been using all these for past 3 years now. Won't use anything else.

last year I bought B and Q which was poor, Dobies which was auful ( although I did use it on my shady woodland bed as it was full of composted wood) and finally some very large bags of Levington professional pot and bedding compost, which is excEllen's. I didn't waste my time this year just bought the Levington, I mix it with fine grit and it performs well.

I found it had got quite a bit of recycled stuff in it, it's a good price but prefer Levingtons

I use Ashwood's own brand (local garden centre) and have always been pleased with it.  Seed germination rate has been really good.

Hi from Kingswinford in the West Midlands
  • I bought some Levington's seed and cutting composts, it was coarse with bits of twig and lots of little germinated weed seed sitting on top. Stuck my hand in and got a nice, fat lump of concrete. It went back to the store.

Bought some seed & cutting from Lidl and the stuff is lovely and crumbly with no nasty bits.

I've discovered that sometimes lack of, or poor, germination is due to the compost being too cold so I now keep it in the greenhouse or porch to warm it up for a few weeks before sowing seed.

Lighthouse , I sieve my compost to get all the lumps out and store the it in the g/h , never thought about it being cold but you are right , just topped up my compost bin yesterday and stuff was wet and cold

Lidl & Aldi garden stuff that I bought has always been good

Going to stock up with compost todayimage
