I've just bought some plant from the garden centre, it's sunny here today. I've also bought 4 begonia bulbs, the lady said I could plant straight in the ground, is that correct? Would they be ok in the shaded border or would they be better at the front of my house where the sun is? Thanks
It's too soon to plant them outside. I said in my last post that they aren't frost proof. There is a risk of frost usually until mid May. But you can start the tubers (they aren't bulbs, bulbs are like onions, daffodils) off indoors before putting them outside to get them going. Begonias don't like full sun, they prefer some shade. I've grown them in full shade. Which plants did you buy? If they are begonias then keep them on a window sill (not in the sun) for a bit until risk of frost is over.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Hi Natalie, I'm north west too , south Manchester. Planted my begonias today, I've had these corms for 3 years now.
They are in shallow trays sat about half deep in the compost and lightly watered to start them off. Begonia corms have a top and a bottom which is not always easy to see. The top is like a shallow bowl, this is where the stems and leaves grow from and shouldn't get waterlogged as this can cause the corm to rot.
A tip I read on this forum is to put them in sideways if you're not sure and pot them on the right way when you see some shoots.
I would slow down on watering them, begonia need the bare minimal amount of water to start them off, I lightly spray mine once a week if their lucky. To much water can rot the tuber, they should feel firm.
I can see something what looks like shoots but not sure? If they are just be patient

Anyone know what is going on with these? They aren't doing much and have been on the window sill for weeks now? Help
