Bulbs

Natalie LNatalie L Posts: 125
Hi all I'm looking to plant some bulbs in my garden in the next week or two so that in the summer I have big bright flowers which will come back year after year. I planted Dafodil, tulip and alium bulbs last year, the dafs are up, the tulips are on their way but there's no sign of the aliums just yet. Are there any bulbs that I can plant in my garden now that will be up in time for the summer or sooner? I love trailing begonias, chrysanthemums, lupins, hydrangeas, geraniums and the likes. Any suggestions or recommendations would be gratefully received. Thank you

There is still time for the Alliums to show , where abouts in the country do you live? NW - SW etc. Other forum members in your area will tell you if their alliums are up yet.

Alliums are a bit later generally - most are summer flowering Natalie, so they won't be showing much just yet image

There's still time to plant lilies for flowering this summer. They're readily available in garden centres etc just now.

The other plants you've listed are mainly perennials and shrubs,  which you can add into your bed along with your spring bulbs, although it's easier to get them in first and then add bulbs round and under them. You can still do that if you're careful though, or you can lift the bulbs and just replant them when planting other things   image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Oh  I live in Lancashire image, which alliums have you planted ? I got some gladiator the odd chistophii - and various others showing. I haven't seen any purple sensation yet though. Not all of them are showing yet, less than half.

I'm not sure, I'd have to check the packaging tomorrow. They were from Duxburys which is a good garden centre so I'm hoping they will come up. I'm in Preston. Are there any other bulbs I could plant now in the ground?

Not really bulbs, but tubers, I have 3 varieties of dahlia that have been coming up for years, even when it's been a cold winter. They are Arabian Nights, Park Princess and "Pooh". I have others too that have survived winters, forgotten the names. Most people dig them up and store them but mice ate mine so I just left them and had a nice surprise. Some, like Bishop of Landaff, don't survive cold winters though.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

It's time to start off begonias - you can start them indoors or greenhouse ready to plant out when we're safe from frosts.  Not really bulbs, I think they are tubers but very colourful and in the garden centres right now.  Also they do well in semi shade so they would brighten up a shady corner.

Mine are also purple sensation. Can't wait to see them. My tulips are on their way up and were £1 for the lot from wilkinsons,mi'll buy more this year to plant later in the year. my daffs are up but there aren't many and they are starting to look dead, do I leave them to die off completely or do something with them?
