The best way to prevent this happening is to start the sets off in modules. As soon as the sets have sturdy shoots and good roots the birds will leave them alone when you plant them out.

For now, cover the sets with fleece until they are anchored in the soil.

hi Annette /scroggin /welshonion         some of the men on the allotments have tried setting them away in modules I allways lay them out when I get them for a good while then  ..then    I have 4 lenths of membrane with holes in them  use dibber to make  holes in ground   (just put 750 insturton   and red   )  around the membrane I have about 6 road pins   that I tie string to with strips of plastic carriers  yellow and red is best the colour is bright scares the birds  I have not had any problems yet  ( kids windmills work as well)

Michael, that sounds very complicated. But each to their own.

    hi all

i plant my onion sets in modules every year with an excellent return

by the time i plant the onions in April they have established a great root ball and plant like a plug very easy with no sets afterwards lifting due to birds or frost

Attached photograph is my sets in module trays in my greenhouse

Easy to do and also starts them off quickly

    Happy gardening
