Evergreen plants

Lorna95Lorna95 Posts: 436

Hi, Could someone help me out please, I have two area's I want to get some evergreen plants in.

The first area is, mostly shade, it gets about 3-4 hours of sun in the morning, It's south facing but most of it is facing the side of the house, the widest part of the border is about 2 metres wide and the smallest part is just over 1 metre wide.

The second area it has sun most of the day, this is also south facing but nothing is blocking the light out in this area, the widest part of the border is 2 metres and the smallest part is just over 1 metre wide.

I would like something that would flower if at all possible but the main thing is that it is green all year round, as most of the things I have die down in winter and it looks quiet a mess.

I would be grateful for any help.

I only have a few evergreens in my garden but I can tell you what works for me. Hostas do very well in my shaded area that also gets a little sun. In my sunny spot I have a few Hebes, one of mine has just put out lovely purple flowers. I'm sure other people will have many more ideas for you

Thank you sophie17, I have loads of hosta's (as I love them) so I will be putting them in the shade area but I will keep them in pots, the slugs and snails over here are never ending, so I have them in pots with the copper tape and I always spray them with garlic water, seems to work for me.

Can I ask what size does your Hebes get please.

    Thanks for your help.

Hi Lorna, I have quite a few Hebes, size depends on variety I have some small compact ones about 40cm high and wide and a few larger ones between 1/2meters. I used the RHS website when choosing them and found some great advice.

My garden looks pretty awful in winter too Lorna95 and is in quite deep shade so I planted plenty of evergreens this year.

Although they don't really flower much I love the euonymous variegated shrubs 'Marieke' is my favourite as the yellow is quite toned down and they do look so cheerful in winter, they brighten the garden up.

Skimmia Japonica does well as does pieris, evergreen ferns, dapnes, witch hazel, chaenomeles, camellia, euphorbias look nice for most of the year, azaleas, Rhodedendrons (miniature ones).

My stars of winter were the hellebores, they flowered thir little socks off the whole wintr and looked amazing (I remove the leaves while they are flowering (or sepaling) image so the sepals show up better and they look great in a group.

Cotoneaster horizontalis - nice form and lots of winter berries.

Thank you Lou, that is quiet a list you have given me, I will have to look them all up and see if they would be ok for the garden, I have hellebores aswell, but I haven't planted them in the ground yet they are in big pots. Thank you for the info, will have to do my research now.image
