Always good to see pictures , must try and take iPad up to allotment
Been up there this afternoon , mainly weeding , at bottom of plot have" horse tail" so can't hoe have to weed by hand , on knees
couple of beds done , few more to go , need to cut Hawthorn edges tomorrow at home plus a bit of gardening , weather should be ok
One of my resent birthday presents was a plastic disc that you put canes in , from Poundland and surprisingly work well , going into Lincoln on Friday so will buy some more , will put picture on site
Had to hoe up potatoes again , the earlies are really growing well
Just about got this new furom worked out and have to say I like it
Been to the allotment done some siftling of soil from the weeds and grass mounds I dug out the other day still more to go but will be very wet tomorrow
Some of the peas I sowed at the allotment are showing and a red self seeded poppy is out
Had lunch in car while watching two people on a plot re - build their shed with pallets was looking good
spotted a truck come in my end of allotment with bark chippings but looks as though on way home they are not in car park for all but on a very grassy overgrown plot so not sure about them - I don't need them yetbut know others that do
Still worring and waiting about my plot after the inspection - have emailed today to see if I get a letter as it is difficult waiting
Gardengirl: The brown tarp is actually a tent cover I think. As I started clearing away the brambles it became clear that the previous owner had covered some of the soil with it before abandoning the plot for 2 years. It seems to work fine for suppressing the weeds.
I've got the last of my 60 potatoes in. I hope they 'clean the soil' as it's just awful. I have little cucmber, cauliflower and broccoli seedlings to plant but I'm worried they won't cope. I dug one area over 4 times and I still wasn't happy with it.. .maybe I have poor technique
Emma was thinking it looked a bit like a tent cover - good that helps
There is an area row we have dug about 3 times now and still some brambles grow up it is a case of if we could not dig them out quite we would cut as low down as possible got quite a few out properly
Having my plants like you in the garden but am late with things so won't plant for a few weeks till area dug over
other thing if you plant out things is using weed matting around plants or try some cardboard with soil ontop and using a hoe I think alot to keep the seedling off - as every time you dig the dormant seed could germinate by getting light water and all
some things i have planted from plot neighbour and my sweet peas have started getting white leaves not very good, fed the sweet peas with a sachet of squestrene tonic looked really strange mixed with water came out red like blood
GWRS yep no watering to do - hope weather good Saturday and you can get the plants out - my tomatoes at home not done too great went bit dried out and have speckles on think need a feed
Is nice sometimes just watching others on their plots from mine while having a break
still waiting for keys dread to think how high grass will be by time we get them!Been reading (skim reading!) up on berries and fruit trees, which is what I definitely want to start with, any recommendations of varieties welcome as am very much a novice, sit north east facing but open, what will grow in less sunny areas? rules say all fruit trees have to be on dwarf rootstock, any recommendations re suppliers & training also v welcome thanks
Reads Nursery is great, rosemummy. If you are going to wait till winter to plant your fruit trees, perhaps you can postpone the decision on varieties till autumn when you'll be able to taste some - our GC does an apple weekend, for example, with tastings. And orchards will be selling named varieties of fruit, too. RHS Wisley does, as well. I'm new to fruit growing too, but I got a Red Windsor apple tree last spring (I've got it in a big pot) and the apples were so delicious that I bought another one for my allotment. A real apple-y taste, complex, crisp, sweet but not too sweet. (In fact, when I thinned the green fruit in July or so, I tasted them and even then they had lovely flavour.)
I planted out tomatoes today. The lowest forecast night temperature next week is 7 degrees C, but only for a while, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I couldn't leave the plants in pots any longer, two of them have already set fruit! (Ditto French beans, I harvested 8 pods even before I planted them out.)
Been to the allotment all day done lots of digging, cuting down of things - watering and walking a lot - found so many things in soil an old coat, electric shaver, a plug, metal pole, ball, lots of glass, rubbish, spotted a slow worm on my plot goodie for wildlife
Rosemummy I brought end of last year from Wyevale 2 apple trees in pots (still in pots in garden for now) they are dwarf apple trees one apple tree same as Aster2 Red Windsor and other apple tree has two apples on James grieve and Cox orange pippin they were in the sale from £44 to £10 bargain
Other than that a golden delicious apple tree from Aldi bare root this year - have a golden delicious at home quite a few year in ground really like the apple so brought one for allotment plot as they had one, also have a peach tree at home they are more effort than apples as you need to spray them to keep the leaf curl away mine looking ok this year
Aster2 snap with apple tree as they had apples on when brought got to try it very nice apple - what do you look at for temp to know the lowest for the week?
