Flippin' 'eck Sheps - I should have gone to Specsavers!
They're quite common on the hills, but there are so many grouse as well at this time of year that I always make the assumption they're young grouse. They have a lovely little piping call too - and always a bit sad if you hear one on it's own and see it running around searching...
Funnily enough - I was singing your praises to the lad I walked back with as we were discussing wildlife on the hills. He was keen to learn more about all the birds and plants he was seeing, and I told him I was on a forum where there was a terrific wildlife photographer whose photos were stunning...
Grouse?

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
The trouble with them is, the b*****s hide in the heather and wait for you to walk past, then take great pleasure in 'erupting'
The worst is when a load of them take off and, just when you think it's safe, a straggler burts out and gives you another heart attack!
The black ones are particularly splendid. Do you have any pix of them? They do a special event at one of the Munros up here (Schiehallion) when they're doing their 'thing' at the lek. I saw a couple in the mist at the top of one of the Orchy hills many years ago. Very strange experience!

The detail you get with your camera is wonderful. I could look at your photos all day.
The females are so plain aren't they? The boys get all the glory in the bird world
They're big birds too - it's easy to think they're not much bigger than the females, but I was really surprised at how large they were the day I saw them up close on the hill. Like big turkeys!

Lovely views Liri. Know what you mean about doing up ruined buildings. I'm always seeing them and thinking - that would do me fine!
Gorgeous setting - you wouldn't mind waking up to that view every day
I know some people hate them, but I love the windmills. If there's anything that spoils view on hills, it's leccy pylons

I feel the same about wind turbines vs. pylons, Fairy. Those turbines are slim and elegant, and doing a useful job...
Thanks GD and Fairy, he's a handsome fellow is Mr Fox
Beautiful shots, Fairy...BTW, your young Grouse are in fact Ptarmigan, a species of bird I have never even seen, so lucky you once again.
Sheps...
