Oh Verdun - my heart aches for them - my Aged Ps got their last dog when they were in their late 70s/early 80s - a King Charles spaniel. It got fat as they became less mobile - but he brought them much happiness.
I think the big question is, are they able to do the 'clearing up' bit during housetraining and walking?
As my Aged Ps got older the lovely lass who came in to help clean the house etc twice a week was a godsend as she loved their little dog and took it to the groomers/vets etc for them and they had neighbours who walked it when they were unable to do that.
Have you tried asking your local District/Practice Nurse? They sometimes know an elderly person who needs to go into residential accommodation but is worrying about what's going to happen to their faithful companion.

Verdun how about Spike spending a bit of time alone with the couple? He is obviously a lovely well trained dog, to check that they really want another dog and aren't still grieving for the one they lost Sometimes a replacement isn't the answer.

If you tell us what your friends dog was, we could start a nation wide search for another one that needs a loving home. Trawl the Internet etc.
Great ideas from peeps
