Sam, personally I hate box hedging, too formal for me, and I'd rip it out, but I know others will love it. You could do something like Monty Dons Jewel Garden in there. I'd start by clearing it and planting annuals to fill it up until you are sure it is weed free. Then spend money on choice perennials.

I'm not criticising box hedges, I can admire them from afar. I just think about the amount of clipping cos I'm a lazy pig at heart.
