  • Thank you for your lovely comments. It doesn't feel like hard work as we enjoy doing it so much. My husband loves growing begonias, the greenhouse is full of them. The plants outside we laughingly call "rejects" basically they are cutting which he has taken and doesn't have room for inside. Now I have leant how to upload photos I will add a few more. The first 2 are inside the greenhouse the third one is the view from the conservatory. All 3 were taken 2 to 3 weeks ago. The lilies, astilbies and alchemila have finished but the begonias seem to outast everything else.

Lovely Marion - didn't know you could grow asters from seed - might try that next year.

    Here are my current stars:

They trick me into thinking spring is here already.

Excuse the hay - OH mowed the meadow, and it seemed to get sprayed liberally over everything.  Big session with a rake needed next weekend.

  • For great germination. Chicky ,there is nothing to beat zinnias and asters.  I was running out of places to put them and you know what a huge garden I have.  result   many of them found a home in pots with seedling shrubs and trees already in them!   Are your lovely crocus speciosus?

I sowed asters twice this spring, but nothing happened. I sowed in trays in the GH just like the zinnias, French marigolds and petunias. Have you any tips, Marion, or was it a duff packet of seeds?

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • I think it may have been old or non viable seed, Busy-Lizzie. as there have been several people remarking on how wonderful their free asters from AGMag. have been.  I am not alone.  I just did as it said on the packet and now am drooling over them.  They seem to go on and on and even the runts are sending up lovely flowers in different shades of pink and purple. i started the seeds off in the conservatory which makes me think perhaps they need it quite warm to germinate and we did have a cold spring.
