Let's hasten the winter! What are you looking forward to flowering in spring?

  • Didn't think of that! A good way to look at it.

I have a sheltered bit with roses, wallflowers and chrysanths in full bloom together too.

Looking forward to chionodoxa - seeing them is like seeing  the promise of the end of Winter, but not what you were asking for. I love seeing Japanese quince flowering once Spring is underway. I think the brightest red forms are so cheerful, especially on your North east facing wall. My other recent discovery are all the new forms of Erysimum such as Winter Orchid which start flowering in Spring and then just carry on until the first snows.

Now look what you've done, Frankie, I looked up quinces and now I want a Japanese quince! Sigh. Must. Not. Buy. Any. More. Plants.

  • Yes - I tell myself that all the time.  In fact I promised to only grow from seed last summer, and bought a ton of seed, then I bought some plug plants and that was the end of the frugal thing.

But Japanese quince are so attractive, and once they grow a bit you can make jam from the fruits.

They do look so nice. The trouble is, the only spot where I could put it is on a north facing wall that's quite exposed, so that'll probably keep me from getting it (as opposed to relying on my willpower, to use the term loosely). The camellias I put there last Feb are happy, but they haven't been through a really harsh winter, so I don't really know how plants would cope with really bad gales there.

  • Not showing off or anything, but here's my red quince hedge, it's about 10' long which is the width of the garden and it's north-facing at the front of the house, it's best ever year was a few years ago now. I should look forward to the daphne coming into flower as it's right in front of my front door and is the first thing I see (through the window in the door) when I come downstairs in a morning.  But up here in the frozen north (Yorkshire) I can't expect anything to appear before Feb/March.

  • Where is it?

Is it in your avatar picture, ExtremeGardener? Looks great! Which variety is it? And is the spot sheltered?

  • Oh thanks Aster, I'm not very observant, that's a great photo extreme gardener.
  • Hey, thanx Aster2 & Maureen60, it did its very best that year and fully justifies the wait. I guess it is sheltered as the worst of the weather hits the back of the house and the front is north facing.  That was pure luck tho, I just knew it was what I wanted along the old dry-stone wall, the oldest bit of the house.  I'll get its name and let you know tomorrow.  I know there were 10 plants supposedly identical but the garden center slipped in a couple of orange quince as well as 8 of the reds so I put these at the two ends.  As always the cultivars grow more slowly than the species plant so it always gets bigger at the ends if I don't watch out.
