Monty's Hedging

Nice enough chap but a tad naive and impractical for this flagship programme.

The problem is that people think he knows what he's doing and follow and then have to take the consequences of his getting it wrong which, when you have limited time and budget, can be extensive and demoralising.

Monty needs to realise this and be a bit more responsible when doing his greater flights of fancy.   We can't all keep terracotta plants outside in winter or take huge bananas into a handy greenhouse for winter or afford to re-do a large part of the garden such as his doomed wildflower garden with fire pit.   Did any gardener other than Monty think that would work?

I'm in the "rip out the box hedges" corner too.  His have looked dreadful since he first did GW from Longacres and he should dig them up.

  • I'm very fond of Monty and love seeing him in his garden, but I don't follow his advice without question. I couldn't believe he had actually bought plants of ivy and vinca major for ground cover - doesn't he have plenty of stuff like this elsewhere? And as for providing cover for "small mammals", the vinca and ivy in out garden, when allowed to run wild, would provide safe cover for a pack of wolves!

But I like the way Monty admits to his mistakes and failures, and doesn't get disheartened when things go wrong.

  • Blimey! I bet Monty's ears are burning.

What about Gryff Rhys Jones' garden??  far too formal for me ...

  • Too formal for me as well. It just didn't sit well in its country setting, and I simply don't like all those stiff, trimmed, artificial-looking trees. I simply wouldnt want to spend time in a garden like that. Even the veg beds had silly little hedges that must make it difficult to tend the plants. Not for me!

  • Here here! or is it Hear Hear????

  • Sad it's finishing next week and think maybe we should  start a petition for an hour long programme! 30 minutes is no time to spend in my own 30ft suburban garden never mind Monty's acres!

OH pointed out during the planting out that he hadn't "teased out the roots"

After he'd planted most of the plants he said " it's a good idea to tease out the roots"

We both shouted, " WHY DIDN'T YOU DO IT TO THE OTHERS?"

When they were watered in , one of the plants rootballs was about 1cm above the ground level.

I too would give up on the box.

I'm pretty sure he mixed up vinca major and minor, but I might be wrong on that one, ( wasn't paying that much attention )
