Monty's Hedging

M FentM Fent Posts: 166
Having admired Monty's rather nice hedging, I can't help but think having them so high would cast an awful lot of shade. Obviously at midday it would be getting so many hours of the strongest daylight but in the morning and by mid afternoon it will be casting some degree of shade. His plants always look so big and healthy; is it just his choice of plants? I always struggle to understand which plants need certain amounts of sunlight or do they just adapt?

  • Plants that I have tried to adapt to semi-shade or full shade always end up growing towards the light and look lop-sided. image

Exactly. I know we dont know the amount of hours of sun each part of the garden gets, only monty does, but surely it cant be classed as full sun. Especially in those borders with the 7ft + high hedges

Depends which way they face - tall hedges on the north or north-eastern side wouldn't shade a border.

I believe that over the past year even Monty has reduced the height of some of his hedging and even removed some to allow more light into the garden.

I had a large field maple in a previous garden, but I could grow sun loving plants near it - for the reasons Dove has mentioned. Height is a factor, but aspect is part of the bigger picture.

Right plant, right place too - and it's also about how you manage your space, and the planting in it.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Those hedges are one of the few things I really don't like in his garden.  For me, they limit access and visibility too much.  I also keep noticing the poor condition of them because of box blight and really wish he'd just give up and rip them out!  I don't find 'mini' hedges at all attractive in any garden situation but then again I do hate trimming the damn things so might be just a wee bit biased! imageimage

  • Monty isn't very good with hedges and a few other things (I notice these things) but he will laugh all the way to the bank while the faithful continue to hang on to his every word.

After announcing that nothing at all was to be gained by sowing sweet pea seed in autumn, I did raise an eyebrow when he did just that, last week. image

Oh, and while I'm whinging, I wish the program included just one shot without the bluddy dog in it!

  • Nobody is knocking Monty as a person as far as I can see Jo? image

As Bob says, it isn't personal.
