Fig is fico in Italian. The other is fica. This discussion is now way off the original track.
Definitely will try some fig chutney. Found a Nigel Slater recipe for that too. Just given another dozen figs away tonight to friends. Wasps are attacking them but still hope to have some to enter into the local village garden show next week.
I do speak it and they are two different words with two different meanings a bit like present and present in English. Or stake and steak.
Brown Turkey has always been the recommended fig for UK gardens and UK climate. I think new plants take some time to get established and the first few years you should not let them fruit.
I have had a good crop this year, well would have but the blackbirds have found a liking for them, just as they are ripening......First year they have struck.
Yep the birds and wasps are persistent pests. In previous years I picked just as the fruit is drooping,, ie slightly before fully ripe in order to get some fruit. This year I have so many I don't mind the loss of a few but I do have to pick every day otherwise the skin breaks and the wasps are in there.

I'd love a fig tree. Is the turkey one the best do you think? How long do they take before they fruit?
Monty looked very happy with his on Friday!
-o is a masculine noun ending in Italian and -a is femnine. Makes sense then. And, no, I don't speak it, unfortunately. Figs are nice though
Thanks Jo47. Has your Jerusalem let you down?
Exciting! I hope it yields well for you Jo47!
