Dogs and Manure

I've just moved a plant and was forking in some manure to refresh the bed. My dog, a dachshund, kept trying to get some, I think he was trying to eat it? Are anyone elses dogs fascinated by manure? If he does does eat some do you think it will do him any harm?
I mention he's a Dachshund because when I mention anything odd to the vet, like not liking rain, she tends to laugh, shrug and say "but he's a Dachshund!"
Hope somebody can help

If you think dachshunds eat odd things you should try having a labrador!!!
A bit of manure won't do him any harm but try to discourage him - you don't want him digging up your plants to get his favourite cocktail snack!!!
What's his name and do we get so see a picture? Dachshunds are one of my favourite dogs and now that we don't have a pet (other than the wild hedgehogs that visit our garden nightly) I have to get my doggie fix from other gardeners' dogs

Pansyface you are absolutely right about stubborn or you could ssay singleminded!
Dove, his name is Honey. He is a miniature wire-haired, we have always had standard Daxi's and we have accepted that they rule the house
Him at his most proud, surveying the domain!!
Another one to give you an idea of how small he is
Oh, he is lovely! And Dove is right, we have a labrador and I spend an awful lot of time trying to discourage him from eating and rolling in any poo he can find.
My dog loves manure. loves eating it, rolling in it, eating a bit more
. Doesn't seem to do him any harm, except for the resulting farts that even he moves away from
Cathy, your dog is lovely! He's so tiny compared to my ginger lump. This is my Humphrey
Takes a while to scrub him down when he's rolled in poo
We had a dachshund when I was growing up, a miniature black and tan called 'Pip'. At the same time we had a great dane called Sabre, just for contrast I think.
I'm not allowed to use manure on the garden in case the dogs roll in it, orders from higher up
Stoppit Tetley !!! I've had Golden Retrievers, Springer Spaniels, Labradors and terriers of all sorts of brands and varieties, and when she was nobbut a lass, Wonky had a Mini wire-haired dachshund x Jack Russell who was just the most lovely little dog.
Now neither our lifestyle nor our home are suitable for doggies, added to which OH's chest wheezes alarmingly when confined in a room with a dog. Fortunately his chest behaves when taking dogs for walks so we enjoy other people's dogs
Cathy
Honey is gorgeous ... so much like Wonky's adorable Yo-yo mentioned above

Dogs love poo! We consider it nasty, they consider it a good source of vitamins! The way many herbivores digest food (hind gut fermentation) means that a lot of good stuff comes out without having everything absorbed. This means that, combined with the fact that poo is partly made up of intestinal cells, it isn't a bad thing for them to eat at all.
That said, it ins't without risks due to the occassional presence of some fungi and the risk of parasites. Regular worming with a product from your vet is a very good idea!
Can you recommend a good vet Steve?
