I remember a programme where chefs entered local shows to see how they would get on and James Martin's Victoria sponge was disqualified for having cream in as well as jam. They do seem to be rather strict.
Tootles, think cucumbers have to be straight, not sure about the plate but I would guess a china one for presentation. Just make sure you get it back or use one you're not bothered about , just in case. You could just buy a plain cheap one from ikea. Good Tootles and take some pics
All our exhibitors lay items like cucumbers, parsnips, leeks etc. on the table without a plate. They display much better when they are flat and we had some wonderful leeks and parsnips over 2' long - not exhibited by me I must add!
Tootles, your OH must definitely do the empty vase exhibit - very clever. Last year we had a flower class depicting a tv advert and someone put in a vase containing flowers with bits from veg. like celery, onion tops, rhubarb stalks, etc. It was .... 'should have gone to spec savers'. It didn't win any prizes but was most amusing for the visitors.
3 eggs, 150g (6oz) each of caster sugar, butter and self raising flour. Mix sugar and butter together, then add the eggs then flour. Divide into 2 sandwich tins lined with tin foil and cook on gas no.5 for 30-35 mins.
Sandwich the sponges when cooled with jam and dust the cake with icing sugar.
I'd show you one I did earlier but they don't last long in my house.

This may be helpful - I think the information applies to most horticultural shows

Thinking of an arrangement featuring nuts, leaves, seed heads, late flowers etc and calling it "Forever Autumn" (Justin Hayward / Moody Blues)
Those judges are very strict aren't they? Personally I quite like blackberry jelly in a sponge - but that would definitely be disqualified.

Sorry just meant a plate for the cake, not the vegetables. Veg as Billie says are usually just layed on the table.
