  • Omg saw my first hedgehog last night. I saw some strange poo in my garden last week and was worried it was rat, but last night I turned my outside light on by mistake and there it was under my bird feeder, I got so excited I got OH out of bed to see. Now he has orders to make a hog house. I want to put food out but do not want to encourage rats or cats any suggestions?

  • 'Our' hedgehogs like this http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/spikes-semi-moist-food-550gm  and it doesn't seem to attract rats or the neighbours' cats.  We also feed sunflower hearts, chopped peanuts, dried banana chips, raisins and dried mealworms. Also a shallow dish of fresh water every night.

    Lots of info here http://www.hedgehogstreet.org/

  • Don't know whether foxes would eat it - but they eat most things - we have plenty of them around here but they don't go into our back garden - we have pretty high fences and secure gates with only small 'hedgehog tunnels' for the hoggies to travel from garden to garden.

If you have a look here http://www.hedgehogstreet.org/pages/feed-hedgehogs.html there's a feeding station which most cats etc won't enter.

  • Thank you Dove, I have placed a saucer of water under my bird feeder and next to it have sprinkled sunflower hearts (which i buy for the finches that visit) and mealworms that i usually put out for the blackbirds, so if the hog doesn't visit tonight I expect the birds will eat them up. Do hogs eat fruit eg apples n pears? I have a few fallen fruit.

  • They seem to have a go at most things but they'd need them to be a bit smashed or chopped - couldn't get their little mouths around a whole unpeeled apple image
