We sat out late in the garden yesterday evening, watching the frogs and hedgehogs.
It seems that at least one hedgehog has taken up residence in the quiet corner where we've purposefully made heaps of sticks, prunings and old pea and bean haulm, as instead of coming through the hedgehog tunnel in the fence from the garden behind us, the first hog of the evening emerged from the quiet corner where there's absolutely no access to other gardens.
Mike, if they're out in the daytime at this time of year there may be a problem - some areas of the country have been very hot and dry - could your hedgehog have been looking for a drink? A shallow dish of water in a quiet corner could be a life-saver

I don't think seeing a hedgehog in the daytime is too much of a problem at this time of the year unless there is something noticably wrong. It could be they are just looking for a drink so that shallow dish of water could be a life-saver.
If you do see a hog in the day try and see if there is anything wrong with it.Some late youngsters may be out as they need to get that extra weight on for the winter.
It is good to hear that a lot of you are seeing hedgehogs and are doing things in your gardens to encourage them!

About a fortnight a go I noticed some hedgehog poo in the garden ,I was thrilled so started leaving a Bowl of dried mealworms and water out mealworms gone every morning and usually a calling card is left no sighting as yet though , I must be the last garden on its or there rounds pass me the matchsticks my eyes are beginning to close
I don't always physically see my hedgehogs every night but the trail cam picks them up so I can see who has been around. They come at all hours through the night so it is not surprising that most people tend not to see them .
Meat based hard cat food is fine, mine like Go-Cat with beef and liver! Also good for their teeth.

Mine were back last night. I didn't see them but they'd scoffed the first lot of food by 9.45pm and a second saucerful has gone overnight.
We had one going across the garden last night when I let the dogs out.
We've had one rather cheeky visitor the other day. Trotted right by our sunning cat like he owned the place.
