As suggested a thread of photos and a little chatter from my trip.

1 and 2. Reindeer. Very common and totally un bothered by humans.

3. The killing fields. A huge pile of Beluga whale bones, left over from the days of hunting, very traumatic.

4,5. Glaciers. All over the place. Frequently saw "calfing", great blocks of ice crashing into the sea. Some are a fantastic blue colour, if the ice is very dense.

6. Plants. Surprisingly common around the shore, where the ice melts. The growing season is about 10 weeks.

7. Home! An unheated, except for cooking stove, rigid tent.

    Surprisingly noisy Chicky. Lots of birds, the sea, which could be quite rough and the "groaning" of the glaciers. No people though and no phone, TV or internet, just a satellite phone for emergencies. It was wonderful to be out of touch with everyone and everything.

    Welcome home Pdoc - very interesting pictures. Weather looks very benign - what sort of temperatures did you have? Was it windy? Somehow I always think of the Antarctic as windy and the Arctic as not - too much watching John Mills as Captain Scott probably.

    And, of course, - did you get to see a polar bear??

    SGL and RB - can't take you two anywhere - just as well Panda is having a day out or she'd be joining in too...image 

    Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down

    The sound of nature - the best sound there is - without doubt image

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
