This entire thread offends me as a nature lover as do the evil poisoning methods that folks are suggesting! I have birds, plants and cats all living in harmony, its not the pets but the owners, but even lack of consideration doesn't warrant poisoning peoples companion.

Sorry you're offended Wonkywomble, I have no desire to harm cats, I simply try to make the garden unappealing to them to minimise the health risk. It disappoints me that our son won't be able to play freely in the garden and made gardening really stressful when I was pregnant.

The best solution is undoubtedly to own a well trained cat, but that's not an option for us. The memory of the one that used to live here lasted a good year though!

I know what you're all saying - I've got faeces from the neighbour's cat all over my little lettuce plants! image   But I'm still not going to poison the cat -   however, a little bit of gratitude from the cat for my OH having saved it's life when it was choking on a chicken bone and the neighbour rushed around here for help, would be appreciated imageimage

There are some methods on here, they may be worth a try, I've heard the olbas oil works. I'm not one to lecture people and understand the upset caused by this. I have many local cats use my garden as a hang out and a large shed that they shelter from rain in, I've found that if your nice to them they do their business in someone else's garden! Doesn't solve the problem but....image

Hi all cat sufferers! I had this problem in a previous garden, but since moving I have been very lucky, no cats! (No I'm not suggesting you move!)  I know how very frustrating it is when nothing seems to help.  If these animals are coming over your fence, could you "paint" the top of your fence with a paste of chillie powder, olbas oil or pepper (or even creosote the fence)?  Just an idea.   But before anyone shouts I will add that as much as I dislike cats I would never want to do them any harm, just keep them out of my garden!!  I was once told that if you get a cat yourself, it will not only keep other cats out but your cat will also go elsewhere to do their jobs, but you obviously have to like cats to try that one! Whatever you try I hope you can come up with a solution soon, and get your gardens back to how you want them.

  • Norfolk none of those have a lasting effect, as we have a lot of rain in the UK. Also, where they jumped over a fence, they then start coming underneath any gap. They do anything to go for the birds you see.

sunflower888, you seem to have tried just about everything suggested. Final silly suggestion from me.......you will have to train the birds to use a catapult!

Good luck. (Hope someone comes up with an idea a bit more sensible)!!

We have a lot of birds in the garden, the numerous cats do get and kill some young ones, only the other day a baby blackbird image The problem cats leave in the soil is one of the worst. Tried blocking gaps in the fence (but not the Hedgehog gaps at the very bottom) they just jump over anywayimage The local sparrowhawk tends to mess the lawn with feathers on a regular basis. back to cat probs. I lay bamboo canes layed over raised beds and other areas, till the plants get big enough to fight for themselves.

  • I had expensive bamboo fencing in one area, and they decided to break holes in the bottom of it. Even when i cover the hole with heavy rock, I come to find the rocks moved!
