Apparently if they are doing a survey and not directly offering to sell or supply something, they do not have to check the TPS list, but I did discover that they get a black mark against them if they have to disconnect the call, apparently if you swear or put the phone down this is to be expected !, so if someone calls and asks if they are speaking to Mr or Mrs so and so or the lady/man of the house just respond with " no but hang on a minute ill get them for you ", put the phone on the side and carry on with what you were doing, after a couple of minutes they disconnect and the calls seem to now be very rare.
I explain that I used to work in marketing (I did for a while) and I know that the results of surveys are used in marketing - the results are either commissioned by a company who wants to sell something, or they are sold on. I ask them to prove to me and the TPS that their survey will not be used to market anything ... they have always hung up.

I let my phone go straight to answer machine,if i want to speak to the caller i ring back. Failing that say I'll just get her for you, leave the receiver off the cradle and leave it for a bit
We have telephones with caller display if it's number withheld or international number I don't pick it up, if it is important they can leave a message but nobody does
They really are a nuisance but I wonder how many unemployed people are sent in that direction because there is nothing else. I am usually polite but adamant that I am not interested/or going deaf depending on the caller
Our main hospital uses number withheld so those I have to answer. International calls are just ignored.
A friend of mine had a cold call from a firm selling greenhouses and conservatories. He strung them along, they thinking that they had got a sale, until he asked them how they were going to fit it? He lives in a first floor flat. Always do your homework.
Thanks everyone for this huge feedback ,I've found them interesting and helpful. We registered with the tps a few years back , maybe I need to 're register .
The next time I get a call I shall ask them who they work for.I'd only just started asking where they got the number from this is when I was told it was from the electoral roll.
So I will begin asking them questions. I did used to just put the phone down on the table and go back to it but I'm getting them more often it's annoying when you find out what it is.
I probably won't get any more for a while now I've spouted!
I'm already registered with TPS, have been for years, but we still get the cold calls. Possibly fewer than if we weren't registered but who knows?
I actually had a cold call a few days ago from a company which claims it can stop cold callers! I did suggest that they might like to go away, just not that politely.

I haven't got gas, electric a car or even a house, I live in a field! Well that's what I tell them anyway. Have very rare calls from any of them.

I'm going to try that blairs, if I remember.
Aww Dave, can I send you a blanket?
