Hello from Canada

Hello fellow Gardeners. New to this forum, came across it by way of a google search. I see this is a UK forum, that should be interesting. I see a lot of gardening videos from the UK, you all seem to love your gardening. From Canada myself where we've got a blanket of snow covering the ground right now and it is a frosty -10C out there. I've got all my seeds ready though and will be starting them indoors this week and next. Planting usually happens around mid may here for us. This will be my second year at my new place and I am looking forward to planting in this big countryside garden again!

anyways thought I'd say hello, have a great day!

Welcome to the forum john green.  I'm in Scotland and although we had a bit of snow this morning the temperatures are way above yoursimage.  My windowsills are already full of seed trays and though I don't have a greenhouse (just a little plastic thing) I couldn't wait to get started.

Have you got a plan in mind for your garden this year?

  • Hi John. Welcome! I am in the east midlands and relatively new to gardening (this will be my 2nd full season) and we had a dusting of snow a couple of weeks ago but that's all. Greenhouse is fit to bust with overwintered plants and potted on seedlings and cuttings and I've run out of windowsills for seeds. I'm hoping the frosts will be gone soon so that I can plant out my perennials and get more seeds on the go image

Nice to see someone else from outside UK here! I'm from Finland - and not very active on this forum, but it is so nice to drop in every now and then and see how spring evolves in milder parts of the world than ours image

Wow, really awesome to get so many responses so quick! the last gardening forum i was on was so dead.

Okay I tried to upload some pictures but it won't let me for some reason. Anyways I'm near Winnipeg, Manitoba. Love hearing where everyone is from, I wish I had the money to travel to all these places. I'm just imagining all the accents lol. I always get told by americans that I have a Canadian accent eh?

Welcome John.  Yes, it's very active here (difficult to keep up with sometimes, especially the 'chat' threads which I've more or less given up on!)

LesleyK..tried to quote your post but it won't let me do that either!

Anyways my plan for this year is to grow a lot of watermelon and start a strawberry patch. I've grown watermelon successfully in the past and so now that I've got a big garden I want to try and sell some. Also growing some herbs for the first time this year. basil, oregano, and some parsley. Will also be growing a lot of stuff that I can freeze over winter. Corn, carrots, peas, etc.

Last year my garden was not very productive because I was horribly sick with gastritis, been 18 months and still haven't recovered from it but at least now I am better than last year. Don't ever take your stomach for granted! I've lost 50 pounds and am on the couch all day everyday.

Also will be increasing my chicken flock from 30 birds to 100. I love raising chickens image. Might get some pigs this year too if I feel good enough! oink oink

And to post a picture you need to click on the green tree icon above where you type your post and follow the instructions - sometimes you have to be patient, it can take a little while for the hamster to run around in his wheel image

Sorry to hear you've had health problems but glad things are improving.  You have got plenty of space to be able to grow enough watermelons to sell and to keep 100 chickensimage.  I'm mainly into flowers but am always interested in hearing about all the fruit and veg other members grow.  I may yet be converted.
