Now the spring bulbs have finished I am expecting the next blaze of colour as the hardy geraniums are just opening and the pelargoniums from the conservatory are starting to flower too.
Winter it is a marginal plant and grows huge by water. My border is shady and damp/ wet but I need to water it to stop it flopping down. Not the best place or garden for it but I wanted one.
Rather than Gunnera I'd go with Banana in your garden. I had a hardy one some years ago in a pot and it died overwinter in the GH. I even lost an 8 yr old tree fern Bananas do look tatty when the wind has been at them! Pleeze let me what you decide to go with
Here's some photos from my garden. This is the first year really that proper gardening has taken place with any thought as it has been a work in progress construction wise, waiting for the garage to be finished (the green clad building at the end, the fireplace etc) most of the plants are either new or have been moved around this year so i'm sure by next year it will look a lot more established.

Does that mean dry soil KEF?
My soil is not for anything with needs that surpass the geum, would it stay small if it lacks water or just plain die?
I'm looking for the statement plant for the middle border, free draining loam and part shade
Monty's bananas are attractive
So lovely everyone, would like to say more, but in a rush, must go and pack. Off to New York tomorrow.
Bon voyage BL!
