Window ledge style heated propagator - any good?

TootlesTootles Posts: 1,469

Evening

Snowing here!

I'm thinking of buying a heated propagator as I've purchased sooooo many seeds this year. Has anyone got one, and what do you think of them? I don't mean anything industrial. Just a small window ledge type one. They are on line for around £25.

I love mineimage Its one of the ones with 7 mini trays

Here it is last year after the lids had come off.  I used to have mixed results growing from seed - now I rarely have disastersimage  Can't wait to get started again this year ...only a few more weeks nowimage

Actually - tell a lie - the one in that photo is a self watering version of the same thing.  I have a production line going most years - on the heated version to germinate, then on the self watering to grow on a bit, then pricked out to the GH, then in pots and into the cold frame and finally to the gardenimageimageimage

Call me picky but I really dislike that colour of green Eddimage.  I like the price though and they could be useful for when seedlings are pricked out.

The heated propagater looks good chickyimage.  Tootles and KEF you'd better order quick as there could be a sudden rush on themimage

I bought the seven tray heated one last year and it has proved to be really good.  Had a great germination rate and hoping for another good year.  They do a thermostatically controlled version but I think that's really expensive.

I have 3 like that Stewart one. One has 2 trays in it which I have found better than one. But I usually put bits of bamboo on the compost to make divisions to save space. Don't need a whole seed tray for I variety. That's why Chicky's looks so good.

Tootles - i leave mine plugged in all the while I use it - its only a very gentle heat, so hardly takes any power (i've got a smart meter, so I checkedimage)

Fab. Thanks ever so much. I'm going to order one tomorrow. Popped in to a couple of garden centres but limited choice and a bit pricier than on line. I've got a meeting in Milton keynes today so might see if I spot any garden centres on the way there - would rather support people in shops than online retailers At the moment.
