For Charlie November's front wall - how about an espalier fruit tree with spring bulbs and geraniums for later?

Beautiful day here - did some work on the veg beds, repotted some 2 year old strawberries into larger pots with plenty of well-rotted FYM in the mix.  Decided to sow all of the old tomato seeds which have been hanging around for a few years - if they all come up (and they might - tom seeds last for years in my experience) I'll have about 20 varieties!  Sowed all of the sweet pepper and chili seeds also on the heated bench and inspected all the other (,ainly flower) seeds I've sown over the last few weeks and found signs of life everywhere!   Before I know it, I'll be out of room.. as per usual! image

Done nothing after visitors at lunch time I sat on my metal bench in the sunshine and for the the first time this year I didn't risk getting piles image Work can be done tomorrowimage

I did sow my toms and peas yesterdayimage hardly back breaking.

My dining room table with seeds trays on it is now in the bay window and we are eating off trays image

Sowed British Queens, second earlies yesterday. Nothing else ready to go just yet.

Sowed Leek seed today in trays after earlier effort produced poor return.

Stayed chilly and overcast here all day, so many plans of things to do, but only got motivated to pot on my aubergines. Looking forward to it warming up a bit. image

  • Hard pruned the rhodi we inherited with the garden when we moved in last year. It was showing signs of brown spot and probably vine weavil then but I wasn't savvy enough to know what it was. Shame cos it had lots of flowers last year. Still, it was good to dose up on Vit D image

  • Bad luck Gemma image it was a lovely day here in the south and haven't done half as much as I wanted but that's the normimage still haven't potted on my baby foxgloves.(maybe tomorrow)  but the front garden looks as if I tried. Nearly all hostas repotted for the summer 9 down few more left to doimage they should be called rabbit plants every year they multiply.image Talk about multiply I have a bin full of margaritas all self seeded they are everywhere, what is the saying weeds are just plants in the wrong place.I loved them last year before they took overimage

  • Dug over the turf that I sowed last spring. Half of the front garden had been under stone chips for about 20 years when we moved in. So lifted the chips and the liner and was faced with some very compacted clay.

Couldn't be bothered giving it the attention it need to plant anything that spring, so gave it a 25kg bag of washed sharp sand and the same again of washed grit, a light dig over and sowed it heavily with grass seed. Dug it over there and the first spadeful if good loam once it was all mixed in. I'll give it a good leaf mulch this winter and that should be right.

    Finished clearing a neglected border.

This is how it looked in early Feb...

.... Too dark to take photo now it's clear, forgot it after work today - might take one tomorrow.

I'm showing the picture as, Charlie November, you might be interested in the pyracantha on the back wall for your wall. I will say, though, that as much as it has lovely red berries later in the year, I find it difficult to maintain nowadays - and it needs great care when cutting back due to its really fiercesome thorns (up to 5cm long!) if you don't mind that it's a good contender for wall cover.

  • This is my first year as a "commercial" grower on the Isle of mull in Scotland, we have been busy since January and, although I have made some mistakes ( I'm pretty new to all this) have a lot of veg and flower plants growing nicely (I have a heated poly tunnel) it's so wonderful to see sprouting seeds getting there "big" leaves, I didn't get chance to spend too long in the gardens today but enough time to plant my second lot of tomatoes and some flower seeds, I also managed to get my apple trees planted due to us drying out a bit up here image
