  • I have a sweet little female Blackbird in the garden. She was hatched in our porch last year and has been my companion ever since. She joins the other birds at the bird feeders but if she spots me out gardening she comes up beside me and stays with me until I finish often sitting on the edge of my weed bucket within a few inches of me  ! sometimes I have to be careful not to tread on her. In the summer when we sit in the garden she settles beside us and potters about  I guess she loves human company and trusts us and the dogs not to hurt her.

  • Dove: I think they are quite common here, but apparently they stay in the forest for most of the time. I have never seen one before, but last winter my parents-in-law had them in their apple tree. They ate the leafbuds, and mother-in-law wasn't too happy about that! image

  • They look lovely - a bit like our partridges - I imagine they looked lovely sitting in the apple tree - like our song the Twelve Days of Christmas which features 'a partridge in a pear tree' image

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Butterfly, thats lovely to have a tame blackbird, i wonder if she will breed in your garden this year, you colud end up with a whole family of them following you! image
  • Butterfly, I am very jealous!   Do you carry food treats in your pocket for your friend?   She must have grown up trusting humans from the time she hatched in your porch, lovely.

  • First thing this morning there were plenty of blackbirds waiting for their raisins, starlings, blue and great tits, spuggies,  dunnocks, robin, stockdove and chaffinches.

Now all is quiet. Probably due to the Sparrowhawk sitting on the fence!

  • I got harassed by a couple of robins on Sunday while tidying up. Green woodpecker is currently digging hole in the grass. First visit this year.

  • that'l sort out your ants then, gardenmaiden - lucky you.

  • Gosh Gillian, do you live by me? Had a very similar scene in my garden today with the sparrow hawk or possibly a kestrel after an easy meal!

Had a pair of robins in the garden, hopefully we will have babies this year! image
  • Hi all,

So far today in my garden (back) I've seen (at one point all at the same time):

    4 Crows

    5 Magpies

    1 Jay

    2 Collared Doves

    2 Wood Pigeons

    1 Feral Pigeon

    2 Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers

    3 Robins

    1 Nuthatch

    4 Blackbirds

Blue Tits/Great Tits - too may to count!

As I'm writing this the Collared Doves have just flown back in again, the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker is eating our home made bird food out of the food tray on the ground and 2 Robins are trying to kill each other!

A short while ago in my front garden (all at the same time) I saw

    12 Magpies (grrr)

    9 Wood Pigeons (grrrr)

    2 Jackdaws

    3 Crows

    2 Blackbirds

    1 Robin

Blue Tits/Great Tits - too may to count

Also seen daily but not so far today:

    Treecreepers (I love these guys)

    Dunnocks

    Wrensimage

    Black Caps

Springwatch/Autumnwatch wouldn't be short of material here! Its like a menagerie!
