  • Little Ann that was what was jumping round the compost heap after the mice the last time! Thank you image, i had looked it up, but then forgot what it was and got muddled up between sparrowhawks and kestrels!

Thanks for the link Dove, i cant see the back of the bird on any of the pictures, but i think it must have been a female sparrowhawk if ive already seen a male image

Yes there are mice in the compost heap, its last years heap which i just left to do its own thing as i want to raise the soil level in that spot, quite happy tho if im hetting sparrowhawks hopping around image
  • Hey, super photos, Iittle-ann.   Was he just sitting there waiting for you to take his picture?   Our one just whistles through past the bird feeder, no chance of a photo.

  • Here's a photo to show those fierce yellow eyes - this sparrowhawk was chasing a dove, and he bashed into a window and fell into the flowers below.   When he had recovered we released him - after a photo session!   The gloves were very necessary, his beak and talons are sharp!

  • It had been chasing a blackbird and then a chaffinch both got away, the chaffinch was hiding in a bush and the sparrow hawk just sat while I opened the door and took pictures, I suppose as we put food out for the birds it's also a feeding station for all image

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • I know!   But it was OK, it got away, and the sparrowhawk was the injured (dazed) one.
