I grew the Chelsea collection from Eagle this year- they have been fantastic.  Will be an Eagle devotee from now on....thank you Davidimage

I have a question though, my spring sown ones are now too tall for me to reach to pick.  Can I chop the tops of the plants off and get more flowers shooting lower down, or is it too late in the year for that sort of malarkey??

  • Hi, chicky

Pleased you've had success with your Chelsea Collection....if anyone ordering seed from Eagle SPs mentions my name, they would be interested.

Regarding those tall plants, I wouldn't recommend hacking them....I have a pair of long, single hand operated, secateurs for the purpose.

Thanks for that David - looks Iike I will have to search in the shed for some stiltsimage

  • Chicky - the secateurs I use are like this:  www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002W6YYXY?keywords=single%20handed%20long%20secateurs&qid=1440334685&ref_=sr_1_fkmr0_1&sr=8-1-fkmr0

As I said, they're operated singlehanded and grip whatever you're cutting.

  • Philippa - as you probably know, yellow sweet peas are the ones that have thus far eluded sweet pea breeders and (as I see it) this chloranthus as an attempt to address the issue and is still an experimental project.....for what it's worth, I have no knowledge of growing them.

    Help please David,image

My sweet peas against the wall are only now coming into flower, crazy I know

what worries me is the nights are really cold and I desperately want the flowers for 2 weeks time.  Should I be removing all the leaf growth and tendrils. I worry they are actually giving protection. There is also a little sign of yellowing and I fed them last week

    advice please

  • They should be fine, Lily....the cold won't bother them. It would be a good idea not to let them dry-out at the roots....a common problem when planted against a wall.

    Good luck. image

PS, the wall will retain warmth, this will be emitted during the night, so that will help.

  • Not so worried then, Lily? image
