Tree rats. I seem to have lost  lot of plums. I thought I had a good crop but they seem to have vanished. The squirrels ate all the apricots before they were ripe, just to get the kernels. They left  piles of orange flesh all over.

They've started on the oak even though the acorns are still green.

Lor its happened again this year! I went down to pick all the plums although they are still unripe, probably about 4 pounds worth, and the lot gone again.

Tree is very tall and overgrown we are prob too late to prune it now, ah well, bought plums for me

I've seen gangs of starlings strip fruit trees and bushes

My greengages get stripped by jays and blackbirds early in the morning. Not squirrels, we only have red ones and they are too shy to come into the garden. Also hornets and wasps.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • This is my first crop and nearly everyone has a bloody caterpillar in it. Pheromone traps next year I believe...

We had this happen last year.  No debris left on the ground either.  We suspected squirrels as we have a couple visit the garden regularly.  our golden retriever eats the fallen fruit but I havent caught him climbing the tree, not yet!

I'm keeping a close eye on our Victoria plum tree... the fruit isn't ripe yet, but the squirrels here are numerous and persistent.  They've already eaten all the courgettes and most of the strawberries in my garden.

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

I was thinking about magpies which are reputed to be the brightest in the bird world.  This may be fanciful but maybe once the magpies see me coming down to the very end of the garden to inspect the plums ripening.  We have a huge sycamore tree close by and lot of birds sit up here watching out for birdy events, cats, foxes etc.

Squirrels are a pain here - they take small apples and this year our plums have been disappearing too.  I hang little bags of soap on the trees - sometimes works.  Used soap as I couldn't source mothballs - anyone know where to get hold of them?
