I think the bottom line is that neither sex is better than the other.Though perhaps we are better at different things. Studies have shown that men are generally better at reading maps but women are generally better at remembering faces. And I emphasise 'generally'.Is this hard wired into our DNA as a species? The studies above would certainly fit in with the image of our cave-dwelling ancestors, the males hunting and the females officiating the 'clan'.
And Verdun is right, women always have been strong.Look at women in wartime, working the land and doing all those typically male jobs.It makes you wonder how much of both sexes behaviour is genetic and how much is cultural indoctrination.
Women ha! I must say that the best boss I ever worked for in the police was a woman. She was firm, fair and very intelligent. Any man who see's women as inferior is in my opinion incredibly stupid. Sometimes strength, physical only, is the male advantage, otherwise any intelligent man bows to the woman's undoubted superiority.
I've thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread and I agree with a lot of it.
Dove, I couldn't get those plastic riding boots on either and I've got big flat feet. I have big hands and wear men's gloves, so that's not a problem.
I was pretty strong when I was young, but I still liked feeling feminine when men offered to carry things and open doors, but my sister didn't, she went on marches for rights for women. Men and women are different, thank God, more exciting like that, vive la difference! But women should be paid the same as a man for doing the same job as a man. Probably are in England, wonder about France sometimes! I have found English men to be better mannered and more gallant than French ones.
My OH does the mowing, not because he's a man, but because he isn't knowledgeable about plants and, being older, he can't weed on his knees! He does the vacuuming and I do the dusting, that's a matter of preference for both of us, I cook, he washes up. But we are both retired. When I had 4 small children with OH No 1 I was lucky that he earned enough for me to stay at home. He worked long hours so I did the cooking, cleaning, shopping etc. One has to adapt to your lifestyle.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Your list is very true on many points Dove, my OH cleans the kitchen, as a trained chef originally he is excellent at making sure the kitchen is pristine so I let him do it.....as for cleaning the bathrooms well that's a different matter!! I have always needed to work and we have always split the 'chores' accordingly. I know I joke about him mowing the lawn but like you, he doesn't do 'plants' but does do the lawn very well whereas I'd be scared to touch his lawn for fear of messing it up LOL!
As for pay, well it's meant to be the same but I was horrified when my eldest son the other week told me that the boys at a restaurant where he is going to apply for a job pay the boys more than the girls!! I was disgusted
I do find it an attractive quality to be "looked after", to have things carried for me etc, i also have no problem with letting the man pay for things! Again, maybe yhat goes back to when we were in the caves
Living with a caveman does have its downside, i wouldnt even consider letting him make me a cup of tea! Not good at handwashing!!! Wouldnt know where to start cleaning the kitchen, or anything for that matter! OL, you are very lucky
Every car accident I've been in was caused by a man - was it you Verd?....
Interestingly, they all ran into me when I was stationary - usually waiting to make a right turn. They were all in a hurry and thought they could get through the 'gap'...which wasn't big enough of course. Not really surprised - men are always over- estimating sizes.....
When I was married, if I didn't do things myself I'd still be waiting now - some 12 years down the line! I remember buying a car and the salesman insisted on speaking constantly to my husband (boyfriend at the time) who had only just passed his test. I said it was me buying the car not him...at least he had the decency to look embarrassed!
Looking at it the other way round - I used to get fed up hearing female friends say they couldn't possibly cut the grass. I said 'Can you use a hoover?' 'Yes' they'd say, so I said 'Well it's the same thing - you plug it in and push it up and down'.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I think those of us who garden can be more sexist than those who dont, just going by my own experience, even then tho its only a first impression thing.
Maybe ive been fortunate or lived a very sheltered life, but ive only ever experienced very trivial/ jovial sexism, a tribute to the modern world i think

You need to stop driving into women Verd. It's just not polite to rear end a lady!

Unfortunate turn of phrase I used in light of your post Clari
