Sorry you've had so many problems and lost plants. It's very frustrating. Did you try the climbing hydrangea? I'm worried that you may waste more money so the only thing that comes to mind is ivy - not flowering - but green.
Any particular ivy as i know theres a few different names? i have tried growing ivy from a cutting that previously worked in another area but that to failed i cant seem to get anything to survive in this position i even used bone meal in the pots when planting im beginning to wonder if its something to do with me having the slate around the plant?
the opposite side has firethorn and this is full of shiny green leaves i looked it up as i wasnt sure from my previous comment what the plant was called.This seems to be growing outwards rather than climbing but none the less at least its full of green leaves

its sad really i had visions of an archway full of lovely flowers but the effect is far from this
