The place I bought my Honda mower from put them above Atco and on par with a company I'd never heard of 'Masport' (Aussie company apparently) which have aluminium decks.  Above that they put John Deer, but in their words "They are expensive for most people's needs".

I was impressed that all the guy I was speaking to did was answer my questions and didn't pressure us in any direction.  It was only when I asked the standard question "If you were buying which would you go for?" that he offered his direct opinion.  Even then he did qualify it by saying it was 90 quid dearer than the Atco.

He explained the differences between the mowers thoroughly, and the potential advantages / drawbacks of the different items.  In all they must have had the best part of 50 mowers on display.

Hyundai power just brought a new mower out. The hym51spe. 'E' being electric start. Fits all the above criteria. Wish I'd waited now before I got my pull start only. No problems so far touchwood

I have bought a Hyundai 51 spe and really impressed so far. I only took delivery recently so only limited use but the build quality and spec is excellent. I purchased this to replace an ageing Hayter with electric start which packed up once out of warrenty period! Still, it went on for ten years so not so bad. I have no regret choosing the Hyundai and at half the price of a Hayter replacement I'm happy. One of the improvements of the Hyundai over the Hayter is its grass collection. The Hayter would never have enough power to throw the cuttings to the back of the box and with my large lawn it meant frequent stops to empty. Possibly that was the cause of the early demise of the electric start. The Hyundai engine is almost twice as powerful so grass collection is not an issue. The travel speed is adjustable too which is an improvement. So, if you are looking for a new mower the the Hyundai, in my opinion, ticks all the right boxes.

Something I would add as the Hyundai has a steel deck, is applying a good coat of quality vehicle wax especially to the underside to help keep corrosion at bay. A relatives Honda, only a few years old, has a two inch hole in the deck due to corrosion. Important to deal with any scratches or chips in a timely fashion or else similar damage will take place.

I thought Hayter had Honda engines, I've never had a problem with either Honda or Hayter throwing grass back into the box and I mow a 1/3rd of an acre each week in the Summer image

Sean welcome to the forum hope to hear mower image from you.

  • Have owned the same Hayter Harrier 41 Special Edition since April 1995 . It has a roller at the back, which  prefer and would get again, because it allows me to go well over the edges of lawns. It isn't electric start but I've had few problems starting it. There are no signs or rust, apart from a little around the engine which is an Italian Tecumseh. It is not an electric start - you may find that after a time that those will be more trouble than they are worth. The underside of the mower was already coated with a protective coating to stop rust and damage from stones etc. The machine has the warranty emblem by appointment to her majesty etc. Always remember that you should service a mower - change the oil and get the blades re-sharpened after a lot of use.

That's the same as my Hayter, a harrier but with a 3.5 hp Briggs and Stratton. It's a non starter at the moment with I suspect a carb problem. I'll fix it as it will do as a spare and too good to throw out. Thanks KEF I look forward to more posts and help getting my garden in order for the summer.
  • For me it would have to be a Honda...they are fitted with their own engines, which are (by comparison) like a Rolls Royce to the others.

Hayter used to make quality mowers, alas present production is fitted with USA based Briggs & Stratton engines....these are to be found in Mountfield and other lower end machines.
