Need some petrol lawn mower recommendations please

I'm after a new petrol lawn mower, requirements as follows:

- Electric start - this is essential!
- Self propelled
- Readily available parts in the UK
- Rotary, not cylinder
- Good for tough/thick grass and slightly uneven/bumpy ground
- Reliable, sturdy

I won't specifiy a price at this stage, let's just see what happens.

I can't help on the specifics but would suggest finding a specialist supplier in your area and speaking to them.  B&Q and the like are OK as box shifters as long as you don't need advice but your requirements are quite specific

Don't know where abouts you are, but OH bought one a few months ago, from a garden center. But our local Homebase were very helpful.

Thanks. Are there any makes that you would advise going for (or avoiding)?

Don't know what to avoid sorry but OH got a Mcculloch, did think about a Hayter but very expensive and had good reports on the mcculloch.

We have a very large garden and OH is  extremely pleased with it.

Purely on the basis of my personal experience - don't touch Qualcast with a barge pole.

I don't think you'll find electric start mowers at either B&Q or Homebase.  Also bear in mind that if you do have a problem with a mower from either it will have to go back to the manufacturer / distributor to be fixed.  If you purchase from a specialist they will generally have the expertise to fix it in-house.

I know in law any problems are the responsibility of the retailer but you will see on the boxes and on the mowers instructions to contact the manufacturer.

If you let us know your general location somebody might be able to make a specific recommendation.

I don't think you can go far wrong with a Honda mower, quite pricey but you get what you pay for.

My current mower is a Honda and it's been great, but wear and tear over the past 15 years has taken its toll and it's time to move on. Wasn't sure if they were still of a good quality, so thanks for the tip.

I used to have a Mountfield which I personally wouldn't recommend from my own experience. At the moment I have a Hayter petrol self propelled lawn mower that I'm very happy with. It's not however an electric start so I won't bother going into the garage to find out exactly what model it is. I am however happy with the build quality and the cut it provides and I'm sure there will be some electric start mchines in their range. My one and only grumble is the fact that it has one speed only so you can not slow it down for tighter spaces which is a shame but not a big issue.

I also have a Honda Melcher mower that is again self propelled but not an electric start. Once again, the build quality and cut are good.

I would happily buy another Hatyer or Honda mower. The Honda would be my first choice and the Hayter a close second. Wouldn't buy another Mountfield. Make sure that the deck of the machine is good quality. Some machine have very poor quality plastic that is easily damaged.

I'm afraid I don't know of any of the other brands so can't offer any experience on them.
