Sorry, I think we're going a bit off topic. But I'm not the sort of girl who goes up a mountain in crocs. I don't go to work on a freezing cold day without a fully charged phone, a flask of hot coffee, warm clothing, wellies, and a snow shovel.
Well poo update for you all. I put a small dish of peanuts and dish of water out every night since finding the poo and the peanuts are all gone and I have 2 more poos.
So looks like the hog is loitering around for a bit, so tonight is going to be hedgehog watching night! Will let you know if we spot him/her.
I saw the cheeky chappy last night, it was fantastic, he scurried across the lawn and ate some peanuts. Shall treat him with some meal worms tonight. Thank you so much with your id help. Wildlife gardening it truly amazing.
P.s this was the first time I've ever seen a hedgehog.
I put out ready made hedgehog food which looks like cat biscuits with the catchy title of ...'The Right Food For ...Hedgehogs' which is very popular with my hedgehogs. Available from big branches of Tescos and Wilkos.
Last year the first hedgehog of the evening would appear about an hour after sunset. This year they're a bit later and at the moment they huff and puff and push their dish around noisily on the terrace after we've gone to bed. OH is a light sleeper and hears them most nights.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I tend to see them just before dark, last night was about ten, one was on my conservatory step. I don't normally put the food so close to the house but I poured some on the step.
I tripped over one a few months back also at dusk, a different hedgehog though, smaller than last night's...only seen them once when it was still properly light.
We have a number of hedgehogs that visit out garden daily. They usually come out around dusk, but a couple of years ago, we had one that was coming out during the day. I went to take a look at it, and it had a huge wound on it back, so I picked him up and noticed that one of his eyes was white. So I promptly took him to the vets. The wound on his back was from a fox bite, it had become infected, so the vet gave me a product (can't remember the name) which I put on after having washed the affected area, enough that the infection came away. I applied the product and after about 4 weeks I was able to release him. He remained a regular visitor for a couple of years after.
Another encounter was at my burn pile. I was getting ready to burn the spring bits and pieces, and upon checking, there was a mother hedgehog, with two babies, it was really wonderful to see them.

I knew someone who put salted peanuts out. OMG, as the young people say.
