I love Amistead and other Salvias but the slugs just kill any of the shrub Salvias that I try. I have had to resort to having them in pots or not at all.

@Lancashire Lass which salvias are the slugs going for?
  • Catch up tv? @Lancashire Lass not all of us watch football.😁 My hubby says I am the teams unofficial mascot,  every time I don't watch they score, better still within a minute of leaving the room they have scored three times .😆
😂 would you mind leaving the room permanently on Sunday please? 😂

Cardonnas and Nemerossa are 2 that are now in pots. And Love and Wishes is currently being eaten by a snail or a slug.😕 But they don't touch Hot Lips.🤔

I think the shrubby/woody salvias should be fine and not attacked too much by molluscs.

Well it worked on Wednesday @Lancashire Lass but it seemed a bit more hard work for the team. When I left the room on previous matches they won much more easily, so do I start in then go or stay away? 🤣

I think the plan for you should be to stay in the room for a minute then leave until they score. Return to the room and so on ad infinitum until they have scored so many goals that the rest of the nation can relax.
Er....... We seem to have strayed off the subject of Salvias and indeed of gardening! 😁 The moderators will be after us. 😂 🏃🏃

    😆 too true @Lancashire Lass
But to get back to the subject, I do like salvias and would like more, if I can find some that will stay in the ground and take temps of -5 to -7 in winter, most seem to be semi hardy which is just not good enough. I am trying to sort out the garden for long term as my mobility is waning.
  • When trimming my hot lips salvia what part of the stem and how big do I plant in pot for new ones?
Can I root them in water?

Depending on whereabouts you are @bettibitesu, it's best to trim your Hotlips back by about a third just to protect against wind Rock over winter, but no more.

It's a little late to take cuttings, but if you are in the UK it might still be OK as generally speaking it has been so mild. This is quite a good video showing you what to do (fast forward to around the one minute mark after the first introduction).

I think some forum members have rooted them in water, but it's not something l've done personally  :)
