    I just planted a hot lips @Fire
Mine was all red, and I wasn't sure if it was labelled wrong. As it's been in a week, it now has new flowers opening that have white on too, so it seems its right. So you are saying they might go all white too. What a bonus multi coloured flowers.😁

@purplerallim - yes, it changes a lot, I find. I like that a lot.  Last year mine was red with splashes of stars.

Mine was a gift from scientists to whom I taught English conversation in Belgium.

I love it when it's red, like it when it's white and feel like pruning it below the roots when it's red and white and looks cheap and tatty.

@Obelixx maybe better to go for a Bumble or a Clotted Cream instead.  I feel kind of the same now. Some of my hedge is getting quite woody now so I might swap out Hot Lips for Bumble next Spring, taking cuttings this year.

@Fire - I have bought Royal Bumble - a much more attractive red IMHO - and Love and Wishes which is a lovely purple tho not hardy and I have Amistad.  I also have a new buttery cream flowered salvia with deep purple calyxes but no name.   Cuttings of all of them will be taken.

I have just got a small Clotted Cream and trialling a Nachtvlinder. I don't really grow purple but I am curious about the colour, to see how close to raspberry it goes.

Maybe HLs is a good entry level salvia, and people branch out from there. It was one of the first plants I bought at a market for my garden. It's done me well. I have had hundreds of good cuttings and grown plants from it, given to dozens of friends and neighbours. Kids really enjoy it. It reminds me of iced lollies.
  • I'd be really interested in how you go on with these variations of that Salvia genus. I have once more took cuttings this year of Hot Lips although they are all just red! I love Amistead and other Salvias but the slugs just kill any of the shrub Salvias that I try. I have had to resort to having them in pots or not at all.

The salvias appeared on last nights Hampton Court Flower Show. Just a short segment about them .

Catch up tv? @Lancashire Lass not all of us watch football.😁 My hubby says I am the teams unofficial mascot,  every time I don't watch they score, better still within a minute of leaving the room they have scored three times .😆
