Pruning Salvia 'Hot Lips'

Posts

  • I have heard that the colour depends on the temperature or the sun maybe. During the hot Summer, a couple of years back, mine were solid red all summer.
I will be pruning them back a little about now, along with the roses and the Buddleia. We are fairly high up here so wind is a consideration.
I have 5 cuttings that I have taken and roots are now showing. They are all crammed into a 4 inch pot so I'm wondering now if I should pot them on into separate pots to over winter or if they'd be ok in the one pot.
    Thanks for your reply..
  • Excellent thank you.  I was a bit confused when my Hot Lips didn't behave like other Salvias I have.  I planted it in the wrong place and it has outgrown its spot.

@Joyce Goldenlily  - I have that variation too - it's one of the things I like most about Hotlips. Sometimes the bush is mostly all red flowers and sometimes all white. I don't know if that happens too with Amethyst Lips  etc.

I wish it had a prettier name, but it's a lovely plant. Mine was only planted in about June or July but is now absolutely huge- and still blooming.
  • Mine is just about still flowering as well and the cuttings, taken about a month ago, are rooting through the bottom of the pot!
  • My garden is quite high and windy which is why I trim my salvia back a bit now. I must admit it has so many flowers still on it I have been reluctant to cut them off, there are still a few red lips left but the rest of the flowers are plain white. We have force 10 gales forecast for today, it is just  coming in now so everything is thrashing around outside.
I discovered another salvia with a single flower stem in flower during the week. The flowers are such a dark purple they are almost black. I had forgotten I had planted it because it has only just made enough growth to produce a flowering stem, The colour is amazing.
  • The other perennial that I still have in flower is the amazing wallflower, Bowles Mauve I think it's called. Purple spikes almost all year around and silvery foliage all the time. Another amazing plant!
  • My brother in law insists on calling the Salvia hot lips, kissy lips.
love it so that’s what I now call it.

Last year (hot and sunny by me) my Hot Lips flowers were mostly red. This year (cool and damp summer) they are mostly all white. Hmmm
