chicky - I'd be worried that they'd dry out if you leave them out of soil for too long. Could you stick them all in a pot with a bit of compost or soil round them? It wouldn't have to be too perfect - they'd be fine till the weekend then.

Ones with corms, rhizomes or the fibrous rooted ones?
If it's corms or fibrous rooted ones I'd get them in the ground as quick as possible at this time of year - if its rhizomes (bearded iris) then wrap in damp newspaper and put somewhere cool but frost-free until the weekend.

Chicky, I think they will be fine. Are they just the rhizomes or have they got leaves? The leaves can feed off the rhizomes until you get them planted. They sell them in sawdust in plastic bags here. Or are they bulb irises?
