Oooh, that is a bit of a tangle KEF, but the blackbird looks as if he may have plans for it
What tree/shrub/s is it/are they?
Daren't show the entire area. At the back are two Amanogawa. Kerria, Choisya, Dogwood, a sick Viburnum? and a heck I don't know, think there's also a Berberis. Sounds awful but used to look lovely.
Three years ago M kept it under control herself, you could walk between and around the back of the shrubs. After we retired we had last year "sorting things" but concentrated on what M could see from her windows and what was upsetting her to see neglected. Me thinks a lot of hard work this spring. Itching to get at it now but bulbs coming up at the front. Think they might have to get trampled.
I'd leave it until after things have flowered to be honest, and then if the birds have nested in there I'd leave those bits alone as well until the autumn
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Only purchase was a fish (plec) £2.25 needed to clean tank!
But fell in love with 'edgeworthia chrysantha grandifolia' Had a bit of a google, seems it may be a bit temperamental and I have no idea where to put it. The leaves from what I can see look similar to rhododemdroms. The winter flowers (before the leaves come) are gorgeous. £12 so may be worth a risk after my hol next week. Need a plan first though I think!
O oh! Just planned some more lawn to dig out and breathe, remain calm, think, plan properly, slow down... can put a few bit of paving through the middle...

See if you can spot the blackbird, in one of the jungles that needs attention at M's. Any volunteers with saws and loppers?

Thanks Dove. Most of the birds nest in the many conifers. To be honest we did cut some of it back in the autumn, you should have seen it before
Here is slightly nicer area, poor picture.
However even the buddleja & bamboo need attention here.
I can feel a dark room coming on.
Had a quick browse in GC on my way home today.
