"Deforestation increases rainfall runoff" they taught me when I did geography "O" level. That was a long time ago, but I reckon it's still true...
I read a really interesting article blaming the flash floods in the Pennines (Hebden Bridge in particular) on what's been going on in the grouse moors recently. Rain is supposed to soak into the upland peat, heather etc, but the greedy toff who recently bought a lot of moorland to shoot over, has (illegally) put in drains across it, and burnt the heather for the benefit of his birds (and therefore, his profit). This makes the rainwater hurtle down the hillside into the valley bottom, with predictable results.
Dredging the bits that flood isn't necessarily the answer - better to slow the flow upstream by increasing the vegetation, trees etc, put in little dams, restore the natural "wiggles" in streams etc. Dredging has limited effect, and can just push the flooding further downstream. Farmland is being protected by flood defences in such a way that the towns and cities downstream are suffering.
Incidentally, the organised group most evident in giving real, practical help to flood victims in this town is a Muslim one. Those who claim to want to keep England for the English are conspicuously absent.
That's all my subversive comments for this evening!
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Doesn't surprise me, Muslims are very kind and generous people.....like my hubs and his chums. Sadly these lovely people have had their faith and general character tarnish by a small minority of radicalised groups .
we have had a bad hit from Frank, M74 which is only 2 miles from our village was closed and the run off was down th old road which we locals use all the time but couldn't get onto today! Our river burst its banks and local farmer said he was seeing water in fields that have never been flooded. We have good farmers here and all livestock was moved yesterday.
trees all ok but interestingly we found a drone in one of them, somebody Christmas present no doubt but I am not happy about it at all, it had a camera. does anybody know the rules?
worried about Bushman, he will be out in the thick of it knowing him
Pat, hope oh not called out for ages
PDoc, good to hear you keeping moving, well done, not long till you get sun
sorry not to mention everyone, doesn't mean I don't care!
night night

Evening all. Not much to say at this time for me. Feeling a bit sluggish this morning and it's already hot out there at 10.30am. Hubby is filling all the house tanks as well as the bore tanks in readiness for the days ahead. Wish we could have some of your rain.......... Never mind, wishing won't make any difference.
best wishes to affected by to flooding. Also, since it's New Years Eve here, best wishes for a happy new year.

There have been a lot of Muslim groups from as far afield as London coming to help in Cumbria
