Wow! to your bulbs, Dove. Nothing showing here, looked this morning in the rain, but shouldn't be long now - unless they've all rotted!

My dog's 11th birthday today, Border Collie. But no more treats left, he's already had the leftovers from the guinea fowl Christmas lunch and I haven't been shopping since.

I've put on about 3lbs over Christmas, but not New Year yet, diet on hold!

Planted Mirabelle yesterday which friend gave me. I'd re-potted it in the Spring thinking it was too small to go in the lawn and it's grown a lot and masses of roots, quite heavy.

Welcome back Woody.  We too are now starting to hear stories of power cuts - our neighbours are on a different circuit, and were off for 5 days.  We are used to power cuts round here (tree branches often fall on the lines) - hence our investment in our own backup generator - but not sure it would have powered an oven.  Barbecued turkey would have been a first!

Lizzie, I'm intrigued, what is a Mirabelle?

Bulbs showing here too, although only by the tips of their nosesimage

Mirabelle's are cherry plums. Mine had little yellow plums the size of Gardener's Delight tomatoes. They make good jam and can be used in pies, tarts and clafoutis, also can be eaten raw.

Sorry, Gardengirl, they were your bulbs. Senior moment, they were on the previous page. Was a bit worried about mine so dug about a bit with my fingers and found iris reticulata shoots half an inch underground. I expect snowdrops are coming up by now but didn't want to walk across the sodden lawn.

    Nite lily

chicky household still up, watching cricket.  Think there is a masochistic streak in here somewhere ....

  • Good morning all image  Our front garden is glistening white with frost - the back garden is protected by the terraced fencing up the hill and nothing is frosted out there.  We're near the bottom of the rise so as there's no fencing at the front the cold air tumbles down the slope and collects here in a frost pocket - it's fascinating to see the difference between the front and the back gardens.

We have no plans for today as we will wait to see whether Pa is well enough to return to The Lovely Home or whether he will remain in hospital a bit longer, in which case we will visit him there - we won't know that until late morning so we'll have a lazy start to our day.

I made a big pot of soup yesterday with the stock from the goose carcass - we had it for supper yesterday, and if we have to visit Pa today it will serve for supper this evening as well - if he doesn't need visitors I have two fat pork chops in the fridge and will make a Potato Dauphinoise  to go with them.

Chicky, I'm not going to talk to Pa about the cricket - don't want to cause a relapse image

Glad your father is feeling better Dove!

Back to normality here. Or at least back home. I've a day of washing, ironing, and clearing out the Lady Lair in the garden while his  lordship fits a towel rail.
