Good morning all - sadly although the children I work with are severely disabled, my work also involves child protection - just imagine how 'attractive' a non verbal child must appear to a potential abuser, and how much easier it is to 'groom' a child who is already used to having it's personal care done by adults who are not always it's parents.
Statistics show that childen with disabilities are more likely to be abused than those without, and yet of course it is much more difficult for that abuse to be identified. The children we're talking about may have difficult and challenging behaviours, but are those behaviours a consequence of having severe learning disabilities, or are they because of something in their lives that they are unhappy about? And then of course, if we do discover something, when it comes to the Crown Prosecution Service, what sort of witness will a child with learning disabilities make?
There are times when we believe we know what has happened - we may be able to ensure that person is no longer part of the child's life - but we are unable to get enough proof to take it to court - and the abuser is still out there, looking for another vulnerable parent with a child with a disability ....
However, that's work and this is gardening - or it would be if the rain stopped - I was thinking as I came down the stairs this morning, what a glorious summer we have had this year - day after day of light and warmth - wasn't it lovely?

Lily - saw your post about your new clematis name - not heard of that one - will google it!
Just checked the forecast and am hoping some gardening will get done this weekend - i have pots to clear, tulips to plant in them and plenty of cutting down and clearing up to do - lemon queen have finally finished flowering, and are looking rather sad. Need to get them felled before the wind does it for me!
I've got cutting down and clearing up to do, and broad beans and tulips to plant - but we're going away for a couple of days so unless I get a few minutes in the garden tomorrow morning it'll have to wait a bit longer.
I've also got some baking to do, because we're turning my leaving lunch into a fund raiser for Pudsey. Pudsey has been generous to many of the children I've worked with over the years - if they've needed some specialist equipment that isn't supplied elsewhere I've frequently been able to get funding from Pudsey to make that possible - so each year I've done a little fundraiser at work, making Christmas Cakes and puddings for sale. This will be the last year I do it in this form, so we're making it a bigger event and having a Bring & Buy Cake Stall at my leaving lunch!!!

Good morning Mrs G - it is a special job isn't it? I was originally an arts administrator doing some temping between projects, and I went there for a fortnight in 2000 to do some admin. I was 'gripped' by the job and found that social workers were good people to work with - because of family circumstances I had relevant experience and knowledge, so I did the training and never left!!!
It's a standing joke that I'm the temp! For a while I was on a temp contract, and eventually had my Induction Day after I'd been there for 4 years and had inducted several other people!!!
