I'm still holding out for my Joseph Bentley bulb planter to arrive before I do my bulbs, have been so looking forward to it (such is my life) but was meant to arrive for my birthday last week, OH keeps chasing it up. Grrr. Off home now then son to schools Halloween party.
  • Hi everyone.  Very productive day today.  Dug over more of the new plot.  Had a small bonfire.  Cut the grass in the garden and swept up the leaves.  I'm knackered.  Needed to get much done as they give rain tomorrow so at least it feels as if I acheived something this week.

However, am now off to the gym for a bit! I must be mad!!

I found gravel under a paving slab by the veg patch was being excavated. Gently lifting the slab revealed a nest of leaves , ...and a very startled looking mouse. We put the lid on his house back down gently....

A quick walk around Attenborough nature reserve (gravel pits by the Trent) was rewarded by coffee and cake in the cafe. A lot of border collies out today having a walk. Its been sunny here all day and no wind.  The calm before the storm perhaps if the met men are to be believed.

It doesn't really seem to be Autumn here yet. Some leaves are turning a bit yellow, but mostly everything is still in full leaf.

Looking back on today i have really enjoyed myself. A satisfying garden day and have done lots - well thought I had till i wrote it down (garden dairy) and it doesn't look that muchimage

A raised bed looks so much nicer witha rough layer of compost on it when it's empty.

GH looks tidy - a first for this year - it won't lastimage

And have planted last of the bulbs, mostly some of those short red tulips that are supposed to naturalise.

I think it's too warm for autumn!!

My green house is not tidy, Matty.

I've stuffed as much as I can in, before expected frosts. I want to clear the dahlias, but I have one 5ft high in full bloom still, and it seems a shame.  But then again, I want to put bulbs in that patch for Spring.

We have two new baby squirrels, just out of the nest.Mummy squirrel is trying to get rid of them, looking very fed up. Its very late, but a lot of the birds have also had late broods, they must be second lots. Natures way of making up for last year I suppose.

Fidget I used to love Attenborough nature reserve. I lived in nottingham for a few years in the mid to late 80s. Do you go to Wollaton park at all. I used to live between there and QMC where I worked.

How can you lie there and think of England

I went a couple of times to Wollaton Hall this year. But the best bit is the chinese restaurant in the old  ?? stables??

The gardens are managed by Nottingham City council, and the museum is very dated. It has what I call bucket windows. Most of the displays don't have a proper theme. They seem to have a bucket load of stuff, not related , and chuck it all in one cabinet. I was itching to rearrange it.

Not long in. Weather very still here too so got lots of boring painting done and fixed planks to battens for bit of fence to hide neighbour's garage. To be very wet tomorrow. Leaves all turning here and many trees bare or half way there. Still got lots of bulbs to put in. Having to prioritise when the weather's half decent though.

Yes AMax- you must be mad! image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
