    Good day

Recently aquired sat nav is called Charlie ( Chauffeur) but in France had a female voice so has become Sharlee

Always used to have a fern called Rodney as well (not now)

Finally ordered bulbs from internet. Have done  quick tidy of the front garden - doesn't often get any attention. And dug up a couple of huge evening primroses that I used to fill in gaps when newly planted.

Going to dig up an almost dead erysimum this afternoon, and maybe hav a go at digging up and re-planting a rose - haven't done that before - any hints?

  • Matty - carefully! Actually did move one out of necessity earlier in the year, I cut it right back, got as much root as I could with least disturbance and put into a very large well watered hole. Was extremely pleased (& surprised) that it grew right back. Just kept it well watered. Good luck.

Matty I think only one rose has stayed put in my garden this year.  Ive moved all the others and they have all been OK.   I put a handful of David Austin rose food in the hole have it a really good watering and put some manure round it.  They are all doing well now and some of them were moved in the middle of summer.

Been busy again today, only went out to plant a few pansies and ended up removing a kiftgate rose it was too much of a thug, never mind we all make mistakes)  also cut down the really tatty foilage on my peony and a few other things.  I think I will be making this bit of the garden my new project.  Its got its problems, namely large conifers that hide the houses behind me but I have widened the border and had the conifers cut back a little so at least the front part get some rain now.  I will have to do some investigation on what I can put there.  Ive planted my aconitum, acanthus and campanula wanneri.  Got a few pansies left but will need to do them tomorrow.

Dove if you want to lob a jar of that raspberry jam my way please feel free.

Off for a quick look round.

Oh Dove it is lovely being able to do quotes .... image

Thought you were still supposed to be taking it a bit easy with that wrist?

I made 10 jars of quince jelly yesterday & I'm going to make raspberry gin with some of my pickings. Would also like to try some blackberry & apple gin if I can find enough blackberries down our lane (they've just about finished but I was waiting for our apples & didn't have any room left in the freezer for the berries when they were at their best a few weeks ago).

Are frozen strawberries ok for making jam? We had a glut just as we were about to go on hols & could do to use a bag or two but thought they might just go to mush when I start cooking them.

Well done chicklet. Glad your cold is getting better, Chicky.

We stacked 2 more trailers of logs. Then we went to the tip with a load of rubbish in the small car towable trailer, 20 mins drive away, wished they hadn't moved it. Then we thought we'd get some pea gravel from the quarry as we had the trailer and it was in that area. Spent ages looking for it, their sign had blown down in a gale. Had to phone a friend for instructions. They said they will deliver small loads too so a 1 1/2 ton load is coming on Tuesday for the drive in front of the house.

The chap who cuts my wood told me he does garden and grounds maintenance so he's spent the day whizzing round with a strimmer and cutting branches that were too low off trees. He's a local Frenchman. Such a relief, the young man (English)who came last year can't come any more. The French one seems very efficient and tough.

Topbird, my SIL makes jam from frozen fruit, but she adds pectin.

Frozen strawberries are fine for making jam.  Tip them into the preserving pan and add the jam sugar and leave them to thaw overnight - in the morning they'll have turned into a mushy sugary mess  all ready to boil up for the jam image
