Lovely and sunny today although the weathermen say the winds are coming back at the weekend. We didn't have much damage in the 1987 storm but in 1990 we were without power for six days as so many power lines were down. We were last in line as there are only two properties down our lane and the team who mended our lines had been sent over from Ireland. Western Power seem to be a bit more organised now and we frequently see helicopters inspecting the power lines and then get a knock on the door asking if they can go on our land to cut trees back.
Talking of ctting trees back, my mission for today is to finish cutting the hedge back. It is mostly the dreaded leylandii (planted not by us but about 30 years old) It's not too bad if kept small. There is honeysuckle and clematis montana going through it so looks a bit wild but quite pretty.
Good to see Verdun back. I'll have to fight for a slice of cake now.
I went out to move the car just after 7.30 this morning but found it so lovely I planted up the alliums I got and sorted the front out a bit more. Was out over 2 hours. The problem is that the sun hadn't come round to the front yet and I was only wearing a thin dress. I was fine whilst outside but am cold through to the bone since comming in . I'm really pleased with the middle window. Got a mixed lot of 10 plants. 2 grasses. 2 ivy, 2 little leaved things which I don't recognise and 4 pansies. They were reduced to £1.99 as one pansy was missing. I've put all but the pansies in with 3 cyclamen and think it looks lovely. Then took the begonias out of the pots on gateposts and replaced with the pansies I got, 20 for £1.99 as one was missing.
Great to see you back Verd.I shall be down your way in March when my daughter has her baby. Mind you she now lives in Westward ho! Still work in Newquay though.Think I will be busy with new gran duties.
Have a wonderful day everyone whatever you are doing

Same here Pam, ours are about the same age, were here when we moved in and I hate them, but at least they block the view from the road. As my borders are mostly along the hedge and their roots grow out at least a meter, I'm always surprised that what I have planted there manages to grow!
O'potty pam that would be great as I do love meeting people that share the same interest as me I often pop into that garden centre by the pub on the two strange roundabout I forgot what the village is called they also have other store on site from horse riding to ice cream shops
I hate acorns, have been raking them up, filled the brown bin with them, some of them are already germinating - grrrr
Is there a way of composting them as they do root very easily? do not have a shredder!
I grew wallflowers from seed this year for the first time some were small, but it did mean I could choose the colourway- I have planted them out and they seem to be going from strength tp strength. I was surprised how easy they were.
Back after cutting the hedge back. You're right Sue, things do manage to grow near. There's day lilies, hardy geraniums, sweet rocket and lots of spring bulbs.
Acorns don't last long here, Matty. Lots of squirrels and this year lots of jays. I think the jays come from the continent especially for the acorns.
The village is Goonhavern, James. Look forward to meeting you if you come down.

Hi James,
I live near Perranporth so you and your wife are very welcome to come for a coffee if you are down here next year.

What colours did you go for matty.? Dont have a brown bin but sneak fallen apples in black bin as compost too full. No acorns.

Afternoon all. Normal service seems to be pretty much resumed here I see.
Did someone mention cake by any chance?

We had Crunchies at work today - just little ones though. We were very stressed....
Rain on and off so might get a few more bulbs in.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
