6 weeks later It deteriorated further, and I cut it back about mid April. No sign of any new growth until summer. I don't have any pix since then unfortunately, but it's gradually coming away again
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Thank you for posting those photos @Fairygirl, it's a really nice plant and sits well with your planting. We just need a good spring and summer now for it to get going! I grow a more upright variety, which I haven't identified yet! It was bought as P. cookianum tricolor, but has only two colours and they are reversed from what they should be. I bought another one from the same supplier about 5 years later and it's definitely right. Photos below:
Nothing to add, except for a shout-out for Signature Hydrangeas who replaced 5 hydrangeas two and a half years after I'd bought them, as they turned out to be the wrong ones (wrong colour). I explained I'd waited that long to see if they changed colour as they established... Credit where credit's due...
@Plantminded I have grown Tricolor in the pas,t it grew to 5ft yellow flowers. I think it is identical to yours green, cream and the lovely reddish colour which forms a very narrow edge to the leaves. Unfortunately I can no longer compare it to see the red wasn't as prominent as your photo I am sure. Like many plants some are better specimens than others or perhaps the fact it grew in full sun the leaves were more bleached?
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
They really are very variable @GardenerSuze, but that’s probably what makes them interesting, you’re not quite sure how they’re going to turn out! Mine are all in a shady north facing border as they seem adaptable and I needed some extra structure in that bed. P.tricolor is on the right in this photo.
@Plantminded Beautiful always good to see your garden. My garden is one big puddle at present but I will get there. I know you posted yesterday regarding an obelisk covered in Ivy. I was wondering what size your obelisk is and which Ivy you used please?
@Stevedaylilly Sorry I have been going round and round looking for the above with no luck. It good to see so many new posts [but I loose track at times], guess spring is just around the corner hooray!

I think I got it from Leander Plant Supports @GardenerSuze, but they don’t seem to offer it now. There’s a half tree guard which has a similar shape which might suit:
You’ll need to scroll down a bit, the website’s rusty too!

The ivy I used is Gloire de Marengo, which I bought from Crocus.
The obelisk is covered in this photo but it will give you an idea:
