@B3 - not a slicing device - the guides just have slots to guide a knife more accurately.

Much like using a saw, don't apply too much pressure just let the knife do the work.  Putting one finger along the blade will help keep it vertical.

A good bread knife really helps, but my OH always slices it crookedly and I don't know how he manages to spread crumbs everywhere!

Years of practice here, and I can’t cut a parallel slice to save my life. Our problem is that we do love fresh bread, which doesn’t lend itself to being sliced. Have been keeping my eye on Lidl in case they get an electric knife in, cheap enough to try. Has anyone tried these? Do they work? I usually buy sliced for sandwiches and toast, but do love a fresh doorstep slice with butter. Just not one that looks like it has subsided badly. ( or is it doorstop? )

An electric knife can be helpful too especially for very fresh bread.  Just keep your fingers out of the way ... :|

My mum has one. It scares the BJs out of me. I have to leave the room when she uses it.

I know it is a nuisance, when you have the right equipment and despite years of practice, you, me, we, still end up with the thin end of the wedge.....

I cut and turn the loaf, quarter turn or two as I go, if I think I am are going off course.
    Not perfect but it helps.

  • My mother used to slice bread horizontally, end of loaf sitting on breadboard.  Now that's skill!
  • Have a look for "Simpleslice" on Amazon. I've had one for years (in fact Amazon tells me I last bought it in March 2014). You put the bread face down to slice it. I tried a lot of the more conventional slicing guides before but this is much better. It works well for bagels/teacakes too, and I even use it to reduce the thickness of crust on a ready sliced loaf!
