Years of practice here, and I can’t cut a parallel slice to save my life. Our problem is that we do love fresh bread, which doesn’t lend itself to being sliced. Have been keeping my eye on Lidl in case they get an electric knife in, cheap enough to try. Has anyone tried these? Do they work? I usually buy sliced for sandwiches and toast, but do love a fresh doorstep slice with butter. Just not one that looks like it has subsided badly. ( or is it doorstop? )
I know it is a nuisance, when you have the right equipment and despite years of practice, you, me, we, still end up with the thin end of the wedge.....
I cut and turn the loaf, quarter turn or two as I go, if I think I am are going off course. Not perfect but it helps.
Have a look for "Simpleslice" on Amazon. I've had one for years (in fact Amazon tells me I last bought it in March 2014). You put the bread face down to slice it. I tried a lot of the more conventional slicing guides before but this is much better. It works well for bagels/teacakes too, and I even use it to reduce the thickness of crust on a ready sliced loaf!
