I agree to some extent about the number of seeds in a packet,  but realistically,  how many sprouts do you want to grow? We like them in our household,  but even so 6or 8  plants provide more than enough.  We had 14 people  at Christmas but  used less than 2 stems and it was plenty.  F1 seeds are expensive to produce   so if you need, blight resistant toms or club route resistant brassicas you will pay more. Most seeds are viable for 2-3 seasons sometimes more and the seed companies know this, so fewer seeds in a pack mean you have to buy more. Open pollinated varieties always cost less.

I often wonder if most seed sellers source their seeds from the same supplier. Is Seller X really better than Seller Y or are they selling identical products packaged differently?

It is worth finding out how the companies source the seeds, for sure. Tricky but useful.

Lots of companies do buy them wholesale from Suttons / Chilterns and repackage them as their own.
