My sister went on a river cruise in Europe and loved it. The boat was small with 150 passengers. My other sister is just about to embark on one up Norwegian fjords. It seems a good way to do those sort of trips.
I’d love to do a river cruise, but I’m put off by the probability of being expected to share tables for meals, and OH certainly couldn’t cope with the lack of choice on set menus. Especially any possibility of regional specialities! I can testify that cruise passengers never resemble the ones depicted in adverts! At least double the age, and weight. I’m sure your sister will enjoy the Norway cruise. One advantage of the cooler climate is that the sunbathing pool areas will probably be empty. Best avoided on sunny days.
I might, just, manage a small cruise ship up the fjords or the Rhine or Danube but not one of those floating skyscraper jobbies I see moored at La Rochelle.
My RTBC? Product insurance. When we moved here I planned to be more outside than in and have always hated OH's Dyson so I bought a robot floor cleaner that was good for cat and dog hair and paid for an extra 2 years' insurance. OH was not pleased but I liked the machine. It died 3 weeks before the insurance ran out and needed a new mother board. Heap expensive but all free and I extended the warranty again for 50€.
2 weeks before that ran out it died again and neither the model nor parts were available again so they offered me a 200€ discount on a "better" model and I ended up paying just 50€ plus extended warranty for 100€. That one's navigation system died in January, 3 weeks before the warrany ran out.
Neeto no longer exists so no spares or repairs. OH has just come home with a brand new Roomba vaccuum and mop worth 700€ and got a 20€ refund on the warranty. OH has paid for extended warranty again. Simples.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

@Ergates , the river cruises we have been on have buffet style breakfast and lunch, loads of choice. The evening meals usually have 3 choices or they always do chicken breast and salmon fillet if you don't want any of the main choices. There was also a bistro style smaller restaurant, with grills etc , I don't think you'd have any problems with choice unless you are a vegan , but then if you tell them in advance I'm sure they'll accommodate. We found sharing a table no problem, met some very interesting people, but you can avoid that too if you must.
I've just heard my first cuckoo. That's a month earlier than last year. Given all the storms we've had in the last month it's done well to get here and be able to sing about it.

Any cruise I was only would have some people not fitting that description
